The 70 Gun Third Rate 'Elizabeth' of 1706
.The Elizabeth is not a ship you’ll find mentioned in too many history books. She never fought in famous naval actions at sea, nor did any of the men who served on her propel themselves to greatness on future commands. One thing is certain; there is no threat of too many models of the Elizabeth cluttering your nearest maritime museum.
Why the interest? In the 1980’s, master model shipbuilder Robert Bruckshaw wrote a brief article on the model he constructed of her. And why did he build her? Because her plans, which he acquired from the National Maritime Museum in England, were not too distorted, and building a model of her would not require a total redraft of the plans. What he ended up with, however, was an amazingly beautiful model that can be seen on the cover of the September/October 1988 Ships in Scale magazine.
